Famous Melbourne nightclub owner Darren "Razzle" Thornburgh has been found dead in his country home, according to The Age.

Thornburgh was reportedly found by police on a mattress on the front porch of his Barmah home around 4.30pm on Monday.

He is believed to have died of head injuries.

Victoria Police have confirmed the death is being treated as suspicious.

Thornburgh owned popular Melbourne live-music-venue-turned-nightclub, Boutique, on Greville Street which was targeted in a drive-by shooting last October, as well as the Barmah Hotel.

Just days later, more shots were fired at a Port Melbourne house belonging to Thornburgh's ex-wife and daughter.

Boutique was reportedly shut down two weeks ago following a dispute with the landlord.

The investigation continues.

UPDATE: 3.50pm

The Age has since reported that police are no longer treating Thornburgh's death as suspicious.

"Inspector Joy Arbuthnot said they are currently investigating the nightclub owner's "very troubled background".

"I can tell you that we are not looking, at this stage, for any other person in relation to this death," Arbuthnot said.

"What I can tell you is that there are further enquiries being conducted into the circumstances of the death and what I can also say to the community here at Barmah is that we're aware that this has an impact on you, we ask you to call the police on triple zero if you have any concerns, Crime Stoppers if you have any further information and also Beyond Blue if you have any personal issues that you need to address."

Arbuthnot confirmed a weapon was also found at the scene.
