"Brownstein, Timony, Weiss, and Cole honour an already staggering two-decade legacy by simply starting a new one" - Spin Magazine
"Wild Flag's debut album kicks some serious arse" - Sydney Morning Herald
Penny Drop are pleased to announce the 2012 first-time Australian tour for US dream team WILD FLAG.
With members hailing from Portland Oregon and Washington DC, and together flaunting some serious musical pedigree, WILD FLAG is Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Mary Timony and Rebecca Cole. Between them, they have played in some acclaimed and influential bands over the years, including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, The Minders and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks to name just a few.
Forming in 2010 without a bassist (like Sleater-Kinney), WILD FLAG have put the emphasis squarely on grappling guitar play, splashy melodies and hard-charging drums. After a year of road testing their songs in tiny clubs and various other live arenas, the band finally recorded their self-titled debut record in Sacramento in early 2011, and released the album to fervent critical acclaim in Australia this past September. With interlocking guitarists Timony and Brownstein taking turns singing, and Weiss on Drums and Cole on keyboards, this super-group offering is as cohesive as it is exuberant. From the mod frenzy of Romance to the psych-tinged Glass Tambourine, WILD FLAG ring out loud and clear on their self-titled debut - there are no wasted moments here.
The band made a hefty splash at SXSW 2011, and according to Pitchfork - "there's plenty about watching Wild Flag that'll make your heart sing, Wild Flag are a fun, punked-up rock band from four people who are very, very good at playing in rock bands".
